The book is actually a series of three tightly related stories that take place in the lovely land of Icewind Dale. Like all good modern trilogies, it followed the two biggest rules. You may be asking yourself why I started on Book 4, well, that's because the series started at Book 4. Much of what TSR press pumped out in the eighies and definately through the nineties has that feel. What? Your not a fan of someone spending hours telling you how absolutely amazing their character is or explaining in complex detail parts of a story that are vastly contrived to fit the paradigms of its gaming genre. My problem is that most of them read like someone sitting down and telling me the tales of their D&D group. Don't get me wrong, there are certainly exceptions and I can appreciate that which is written better than others. Why, you may ask, is that? It's because in truth as much as I'd really like to, I really just don't like fantasy novels all that much. Probably half of the 450 or so novels on the shelves to my left are all fantasy novels, most of which I haven't read. I've got a lot of fantasy books, mostly from a (mis)spent youth.
